an extravagant vulnerability

in my work i explore the identity of humanity, its vulnerability and its temporality, inspired by the vocabulary of contemporary culture, and mankind’s fragile relationship to nature. i am interested in human behavior, and in particular, issues of gender, greed, beauty, sexuality, death, and decay.

my works are a study of contrasts: simplicity and complexity, prison and sanctuary, freedom and containment. much of the work begins with simple forms found in nature, a spiral or an ellipse. these elements are paired with others components clearly suggesting the presence of man, such as cages, labyrinths, hooks, and pulleys. then, extravagant ornamentation is added in lush patterns or lavish organic materials.

within all of this i find the exploration of materials most stimulating and i seek out the challenge of discovering what outcome a new surface will render; or how some common substance might create a totally original expression. whether it is silk painted with tar, gold-leafed toilet paper, digital technology, cardboard, polished glass, resin coated bees, decaying flower petals, or cracked mirrors, i attempt to create objects that captivate the viewer, propose thoughtful responses, and encourage the mind to reconcile reason and impulse.
